Date enacted:            

          May 10, 1773 by the Parliament of Great Britain, leading up to the start of the American Revolutionary War. Date repealed: 1861, through the Statute Law Revision Act.

 

Purpose:

           The Tea Act was created by the greatly indebted British government and was enforced on the American colonists in the time just before the start of the American Revolutionary War. The primary purpose of the Tea Act was to bail out the degrading East India Company, which was necessary to the welfare of the British economy.
